  • A beginners guide to fiddle ornamentation

In this workshop we will take a straightforward jig that is commonly known and look at both some left hand and bow ornamentation techniques, we will also consider groove. The focus will be on making the tune your own, not on learning a new tune, so we will work with notes and with musical phrases. Left hand ornaments and most bow techniques can be used with any style of folk tune, so you will learn ornaments that are transferable to reels, polkas, hornpipes, waltzes: to any tunes you play. The workshop is appropriate for fiddle players of all levels who can play some tunes and would like to develop their ornamentation skills, you should be confident playing a tune through. It is not suitable for complete beginners. You will gain more from the workshop if you can play some tunes without dots.
