A beginners introduction for folk musicians and singers on using PA and amplification systems. Adie will look at the pros and cons of different pick-ups, microphones, bugs and inducers. He will also look at trouble shooting and the jargon involved when using sound systems. -
DADGAD Guitar

Cost: £5An introduction to backing Folk Tune in DADGAD. DADGAD style guitar accompaniment is a staple component of modern Celtic music. This workshop will allow you to explore the
basics of this tuning. Focusing on ‘The Silver Spear’, we will explore the theory of chord structure and explore the strumming patterns that can provide a simple but effective backing. You will need a guitar, a plectrum and the ability to strum basic chords. Darren plays guitar with Ceilidh band Stumpy Oak and in Celtic sessions across East Anglia.

Banjo

Cost: £5For 5 string finger-picking banjo players. An introduction to playing melodies and tunes on the banjo. Jamie is a UK based banjo player, guitarist and songwriter. He started gigging at the age of 12, and grew up surrounded by both the blues music popular in his home town of Maryport, and the Irish folk music played by his father. His playing and song-writing styles reflect these varied influences.

Release your inner stories

Cost: £5As human beings we're all storytellers. This workshop will improve your natural gift, help you structure your stories, be they true, traditional or original, and improve your delivery. It is my hope and expectation that you will leave with a tale to tell and the confidence to tell it. No previous experience is required. Please bring a pen/pencil and some paper. You may bring a voice recorder (eg smartphone) if you wish.

East Anglian Songs

Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer

Cost: £5Mel is an experienced player and workshop leader. IN the 90 mins he will outline the history, construction and playing styles of the instrument followed by a 'hands on' period of actually playing the dulcimer and singing along too! He provides instruments to use and everything else that will be needed.

Improve your Bodhran style

Cost: £5The Bodhran workshop will be aimed at begineers and intermediate players and will cover basic jigs, reels , syncopation and the drums position within the frame work of the "session".
Mog is a professional bodhran player with a wealth of teaching experience having taught for over 30 years at festivals both home and abroad. His workshops are exhilarating and fun, with an inclusive teaching style. He has a knack for gently inspiring confidence in each person regardless of their level or ability at drumming. As a well-respected drum maker, he will also have drums for use during the workshops.

Mr Jackson’s delight

Singing together

Cost: £5I grew up singing and have always loved it for the sense of well-being, happiness and 'togetherness' it brings. For over a decade, leading community singing groups is my primary vocation, and one of my deepest joys. I offer workshops both independently and as part of the singing for well-being charity Sing Your Heart Out (www.syho.org), of which I am both the Musical Director and on the tutor team. I greatly enjoy being a member of the 'Natural Voice' community, celebrating that singing is our birthright and every voice is welcome. Mandolin

Cost: £5–Nic will discuss and demonstrate a variety of approaches to playing traditional tunes on the mandolin, using repertoire from a broad cross-section of traditions and genres. Throughout the session a number of different accompaniment styles will be covered, as well as looking at effective ways of embellishing solo playing by using alternate and cross-picking techniques with an emphasis on bluegrass and old-time tunes. Suitable for listening participants, but bring a mandolin if you have one!

Song writing with Sam Kelly

Cost: £5Sam will discuss his approach to songwriting, and how he uses similar methods when arranging traditional songs or covers of other peoples’ songs. There will be opportunity to share your own songs and receive feedback from Sam. Just bring your instrument (it doesn’t matter if you just use your voice and don’t play an instrument!) and all ability levels are welcome. You are welcome to bring a recording device also.

Folk and the flute

Cost: £5In the workshop we will learn an easy Irish jig and look at how and where to ornament it. The workshop will cover basic ornamentation such as cuts and rolls and how to practise/implement these effectively. Open to beginner level flute and whistle players. No need to bring anything apart from your own instrument. If bringing a whistle, please bring a whistle in D.

Cost: FreeTaste life in a newly formed Suffolk community folk orchestra. We will be playing and experimenting with some of our favourite European folk tune. Our tune arrangements usually have three or four parts to play with: melody, harmony lines, and a bass line with chords. Open to all experience levels, from beginner to experienced. A family friendly 'play' session, including accompanied youngsters. Bring an instrument and join in, or come and listen. We love to be creative and to share musical ideas, skills and leadership. Sheet music and refreshments will be provided. If you have a music stand, then please bring it, if not then just come and share with us.

Squeeze East – Have go on the Concertina

SqueezEast Concertinas will play a selection of pieces to go some way towards illustrating the wide range of music we enjoy, in the style of the concertina bands of the 19th and early 20th century.
Afterwards we will give a brief description of both Anglo and English concertinas, and then offer people the opportunity to have a guided, hands-on go, on the system of their choice. This will be either on a one-to-one, or small group basis depending on the level of interest. We will have around half a dozen tutor instruments of each system available on the day.
We envisage a performance of around 40 minutes, and with a quick turn-around, about the same time for the workshop. -
Victoria Drew-Batty – Telling stories

Parents are expected to stay with their child during this eventVictoria's most recent book is ‘Their Second World War’ – a children's book containing true stories of the War, collected by her. In the workshop Victoria will share some examples of how personal accounts can be woven into a great story. She will then share some Fairy Tales written during WW1 and use them as inspiration to enable children to write or tell their own story.

Putting ballads to music
Venue: The Bell Gallery, Earsham St, Bungay

Cost: Free
Douglas will introduce the ballad, its history and the various ways in which it has been used through the ages. Examples would be read out and include extracts from Charles Causley, Oscar Wilde's Ballad of Reading Jail and Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This leads into Charles Causley’s Ballad for Katherine of Aragon which was put to music by Martin Simpson.
You don’t need to bring an instrument. The idea is to show what’s possible so that you can go away, pick your own story, write a ballad and set it to music.
